1 Corinthians 4:1,2
True Servanthood
Memory Verse: (vs. 2) “ Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful”
Lesson Scripture:
1 Corinthians 4:1-2 (NKJV) Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.
What is a servant of Christ?
The Greek word is huperetes meaning ”underowers” - indicating the lowest of galley
slaves. These are the slaves rowing on the bottom tier of the ship.
A servant of Christ is one who serves and is under the authority of The Lord Jesus Christ.
The word steward comes from the Greek word oikonomos, which means the overseer of an estate. He is set over others but he himself is also a slave and must give an account of himself as well as his master’s possessions.
The mysteries of God are simply the truths of the word of God. A mystery is something that has been hidden or kept secret. It is something that was undiscovered by human reason but now revealed by God.
The ministers’ job is to serve the people of God and reveal or explain to them the truths of the Word of God.
Paul says in Verse 1 of 1 Corinthians 4, “Consider us” or view us as servants of Christ
and stewards of the mysteries of God. The Corinthian church had began to make the
ministers of God, celebrities. They began to argue over teaching styles and to exalt one minister over another. Paul is explaining to them that all minister are servants in the eyes of God and that as the people of God, we should view them the same way.
Point 1 - No minister is to be exalted above another because they are all servants of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. They all answer to the same master. They are not celebrities and should not be put up on a pedestal, because it takes the glory from God where it belongs.
Point 2 - Ministers are stewards of God. Because the stewards work was not closely
supervised, he had to be trustworthy and responsible. He is a steward (Overseer) over the truths of the Word of God.
Point 3 - The Ministers are required to be faithful. The minister is required to be faithful in ministering the truths of the Word of God. This is a essential element. He is held accountable and shall be judged for how well he handled his obligations (Matt.25:14-30).
A) He must not hold back or fail to share the truth.
B) He must not substitute some other message for the truths of God.
C) He must not mix some other doctrine with the truths of God’s Word.
Gal. 1:6-9 says, Let him be accurse who preach any other gospel than Jesus Christ and
Him crucified.
BE BLESSED!
Pastor Leona
1 Corinthians 3:5-8 (NKJV) Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
